Welcome to Oakville Shop Woodworking blog. I'm a woodworker who specializes in creating custom beer flight boards and tap handles from start to finish. I take pride in using locally grown woods and creating unique designs that stand out from the rest. In this blog post, I'll be discussing the benefits of using custom beer flight boards, the different types of wood I use to make them, how I create custom designs and the step-by-step process I use to make each design. So sit back, grab a cold one, and let's dive into the world of custom beer flight boards!
Custom beer flight boards are wooden trays that are designed to hold several small glasses of beer, typically between four and six. They're an essential tool for breweries, wineries, distilleries, restaurants, and individuals who want to offer their guests a unique and memorable drinking experience.
Custom beer flight boards offer many benefits, including the ability to sample multiple types of beverages at once, an element of sophistication and style, and practical advantages such as reducing the risk of spills and helping drinkers keep track of which beer is which. They're a great investment for anyone who wants to elevate their drinking experience and offer their guests something special.
I use a variety of locally grown woods to make our custom beer flight boards, including oak, cherry, maple, and walnut. Each type of wood has its own unique characteristics and benefits. I work closely with our customers to help them choose the perfect wood for their custom beer flight board.
I specialize in creating unique shapes and designs for custom beer flight boards. While I don't create the logos myself, I work closely with my customers to ensure that their logo is perfectly integrated into the design of the board. Some of my favorite designs include a surfboard-shaped flight board and a snowboard-shaped flight board. By working closely with my customers and incorporating their logos into these unique designs, I'm able to create one-of-a-kind beer flight boards that perfectly capture their brand or personal style.
Here's a step-by-step guide to my process for making a custom beer flight board:
Determine the size of the glasses: Before I begin designing the flight board, I need to know the size of the glasses that will be used and how many glasses need to fit in the flight board.
Design the flight board: Using CorelDraw graphic software, I design the flight board according to the customer's specifications. Once the design and layout is approved, I move on to programming the shape for CNC router machining.
Create a 3D model: I often provide customers with a 3D model of their custom beer flight board so they can see what it will look like before it's made.
Cut the basic shape: Using a CNC router, out of client selected wood.
Sand and finish: Once the board is cut to shape, I use sanders to smooth and finish it.
Engrave logos or designs: If requested by the customer, I can also engrave logos or designs onto the board using a laser engraving machine
Apply wood stain and lacquer finish: I apply a wood stain to enhance the natural beauty of the wood and protect it from damage. Then, I apply a lacquer finish to give it a smooth and durable surface. This step is optional. Some of my clients will use the boards natural unfinished. Wood will get a natural patina after some time.
Quality control: Before shipping out each custom beer flight board, I perform a thorough quality control check to ensure that it meets my high standards
By following this process, I'm able to create one-of-a-kind custom beer flight boards that are both beautiful and functional.
In conclusion, using a custom beer flight board offers many benefits, including the ability to sample multiple types of beer at once and add an element of sophistication to any gathering. At Oakville Shop Woodworking, I take pride in creating high-quality custom beer flight boards that are both functional and beautiful.
